Current Research:The guiding principle behind Dr. Mabaya’s current research is that efficient agricultural markets can contribute significantly to the economic development of rural populations in Less Developed Countries (LDCs). The research initiatives can be divided into two broad categories as follows: Market Integration and Equilibrium: This quantitative research advances a diagnostic understanding of smallholder agricultural markets in Zimbabwe. The specific objectives are to: (a) analyze the market structure and participant conduct of smallholder grain and horticultural markets, (b) appraise the economic performance by evaluating market integration and competitive equilibrium between urban spot markets, (c) compare the structure, conduct and economic performance of smallholder grain markets vis-a-vis horticultural markets, and (d) suggest policy recommendations and institutional innovations based on the research findings. The research is being expanded to analyze integration and equilibrium among cereal markets in Southern Africa. Seed Industry in East and Southern Africa: This research initiative conducts and co-ordinates market analysis of the seed industry in selected East and Southern African countries. The research findings are used in guiding market strategies for small to medium sized seed companies and informing public policy with the goal of improving service to smallholder farmers. The research uses the Industrial Organization framework to document the domestic industries’ market structure, participant conduct and economic performance. Case studies of small to medium sized seed companies will also the documented. Back©
